Should General Santos City Invest More in Green Spaces for a Healthier Future?

Image
Plaza Heneral Santos stands as an essential urban park in General Santos City, offering residents and visitors a space to connect with nature, engage in physical activities, and find respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. However, its benefits go far beyond recreation. Urban parks like Plaza Heneral Santos provide vital ecosystem services that significantly contribute to the health and well-being of communities. Parks encourage physical exercise, relaxation, and social interaction, which improve mental health, reduce stress, and promote physical well-being. Is It Time for General Santos City to Establish a Tribute to Br. Bob McGovern's Contributions?

Br. Robert Bernard "Bro Bob" McGovern, who passed away on May 19, 2021, at the age of 91, left an indelible mark on General Santos City through decades of unwavering service and dedication. As a Marist Brother, he spent 72 years of his life committed to uplifting communities, most notably through his work at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU). His legacy is one of transformation, having launched programs that significantly impacted social development, healthcare, and local business. Br. Bob’s initiatives touched countless lives. He helped establish the Business Resource Center Foundation, which provided essential training, consulting, and financial support to entrepreneurs, creating pathways for employment, particularly for "out of school" youth enrolled in the Marist Technical Training Programs. Passing through Pioneer Avenue during my recent visit, I felt a sense of nostalgia mixed with disappointment. The street, once bustling with activity, has become quieter, with many establishments moving to other parts of the city, leaving behind a semblance of its former vitality. During my stay at a new hotel near the avenue, I had the chance to revisit familiar places, only to find that much of what made Pioneer Avenue special has faded. The major park, which used to be a lively space where families gathered and friends met, now feels dim and neglected, especially at night. The lights are few, and the vibrancy that once characterized the hea...
