Can General Santos City Restore Its Soul with New Initiatives?
General Santos City, once a vibrant hub with its iconic Pioneer Avenue --remember the clock and chalice shaped paths as viewed from above -- at the heart, has seen significant changes over the years. The bustling thoroughfare that defined my youth, alive with shops, restaurants, and the energy of a growing city, now seems to have lost its appeal. Passing through Pioneer Avenue during my recent visit, I felt a sense of nostalgia mixed with disappointment. The street, once bustling with activity, has become quieter, with many establishments moving to other parts of the city, leaving behind a semblance of its former vitality.
During my stay at a new hotel near the avenue, I had the chance to revisit familiar places, only to find that much of what made Pioneer Avenue special has faded. The major park, which used to be a lively space where families gathered and friends met, now feels dim and neglected, especially at night. The lights are few, and the vibrancy that once characterized the heart of the city is noticeably absent. It is disheartening to see such a crucial part of the city’s identity slowly fade away.
With the local elections approaching in May 2025, there is hope that new leadership will bring fresh ideas and initiatives to reinvigorate General Santos City. The city, once dubbed as "the city without a soul," deserves leaders who understand the importance of creating spaces that foster community engagement and cultural vibrancy. My hope is that the next generation of leaders will prioritize the revival of Pioneer Avenue and other parts of the city, bringing life back to its streets, parks, and public spaces.
The landscape of any city may have changed, but as the Spanish historian's Ortiz Armengol observed, its streets and outline remain.
It is up to the General Santos City’s leaders and community to restore its soul, breathing new life into a place that holds so many memories and untapped potential.
